I love how it models a process of using a handbook to figure out what type of item you have. That might help build some genre awareness. I also love how it describes the why of the different citation formats.

I love this idea, particularly as a corrective to some of the fear and gloom and doom you see in a lot of library leadership publications. ACRL put out a Futures Thinking for Academic Librarians doc in 2010, and the ARL 2030 Scenarios might also be relevant (if a little apocalyptic in tone.)

Since I’m traveling by bus from Maine, I shall need to leave in time to catch the 4:15 p.m. bus out of South Station. I had originally planned to stay overnight Sat., but, in light of weather reports, I would want to leave in advance of the storm. This is a great topic, something I’ve been thinking about as well. I recently paid a visit to a class in their regular classroom to help students in a capstone course use Zotero to manage their citations. The variety of computers and browsers in the room meant that no two students’ computers were the same. I’m looking forward to hearing more about this!

I've been thinking about proposing a related session, so this is perfect! I'm interesting in something exploring the lines (are there lines?) between training and teaching. I am inspired by this post (hat tip dh + lib), specifically the discussion of the challenges of "lab pedagogy". In order to get students to the point where they can see how digital methods fit into a larger framework, you have to spend a lot of time teaching somewhat mechanical technical skills. How do we scaffold and give context to the mechanical/technical skills? I would also love some problem solving on the lab approach, particularly involving these tech tools that show up so much in our library instruction.

I just finished up with a phone interview for a job at Temple University, and a topic similar to this came up. When I asked about upcoming digital projects, one thing they’re looking at providing instructional support for DH projects through workshops and office hours. It was brought up in the context of the libraries being able to support DH initiatives in a sustainable fashion because the library only has so much resources and manpower. I’d definitely be up to discuss more stuff along this line.

There was also some interesting discussion at the recent Modern Language Association convention in Boston about if / how MOOCs get sort of lumped in with Digital Humanities, even though many folks in DH might have a relatively wary and critical view of MOOCs. (This should be a fruitful topic!)

Ithaka S+R just released a great Sustainability Health Check Tool for this kind of question. The tool (and larger report that goes with it) implies the kind of hand off that Frank describes, I think: once a project goes into maintenance mode, the library may have greater / different kind of responsibility.

When I was working at a nonprofit, I helped write several grant applications for archival and oral history projects, and one of the main points looked for in the grant applications was how the project would be sustained or maintained after the grant project period ended. I believe that libraries can be important collaborative partners in this aspect, if they have taken the time and effort to build the infrastructure so that when a project ends they can take up stewardship for it. Partnerships like that can help strengthen a grant application, as well as strengthen ties for the library with the rest of the community.

Additionally, what you talk about Christime reminds me of what I see a lot from video game developers. They’ll create a game, release it, and then move on to their next project. The released game then tends to move to a different team that becomes responsible for maintaining the code through support and patches, as well as possibly preparing updates or expansions.

Just thinking that one aspect to teaching new users is to demonstrate value….the core value…so in addition to focusing on new users, maybe those techniques can be customized or used as a cornerstone to build for different audiences…like stakeholders or power users…

In the enterprise we often have operations teams to which projects are handed off. No, not as fun, but just as critical! These teams keep the quality high, but also got to make updates when appropriate. Perhaps some of those practices may be of use.

7. How can colleges and universities fold MOOCs into their own curricula, and what role could librarians and professors play in this process?

8. How can people interested in or working with MOOCs “curate” MOOCs? What criteria could be used to evaluate MOOCs, and how could student evaluations be structured? (This would be necessary for colleges and universities making MOOCs part of their courses, and it would be a challenge to fit the evaluation of a MOOC into most existing course evaluation systems.

9. How can public libraries take advantage of MOOCs? Could public librarians offer assistance with MOOCs and organize students taking MOOCs, similarly to how public libraries facilitate continuing education?
